The Uqqurmiut Centre for Arts and Crafts draws visitors from all over the world to the small community of Pangnirtung on Baffin Island, in Nunavut, Canada’s newest northern territory (1999).

Pangnirtung is situated on a deep fiord that cuts through the mountain peaks of the Penny Ice cap from Cumberland Sound to Auyuittuq National Park. Visitors come to hike and camp in the park, to cross over the Arctic Circle, sight-see by boat on Cumberland Sound and to buy some of the finest arts and crafts to be found in Canada’s Arctic.

Situated on the leeside of a mountain (uqqurmiut, prounced oo-koor-me-oot, is an Inuktitut word that means “the people of the leeside”, the Uqqurmiut Centre is an Inuit arts facility conceived and constructed in 1989 to serve the Inuit artists and community of Pangnirtung. The Centre provides arts development opportunities, employment for artists and through its Gallery markets Inuit fine art and craft to visitors from all over the world

Visitors to this website are likely to be familiar with Inuit art. Inuit art is known for its striking soapstone sculpture, its distinctive fine art prints, drawings and hand made crafts. Unique to Pangnirtung are the world renowned hand woven tapestries created in the Tapestry Studio of the Uqqurmiut Centre. These have been exhibited and sold in fine art galleries since 1973. This website is intended to serve as a virtual art gallery where visitors can view and buy authentic Inuit art from well-known Pangnirtung artists.
