Peter Wilson has come to the Arctic from Wolfville, Nova
Scotia, and brings a wealth of experience to his role as General Manager through
his background in creative writing, graphic design and small business
management. His long-time interest in Inuit art and curiosity about the Arctic
led to his applying to the Uqqurmiut Centre when the general manager position
became vacant in 2000. He assumed his full-time duties in early February of 2001
and is now showing every sign of becoming a seasoned veteran of the North. Peter
is aware that he must fit into big shoes, left empty by preceding managers Ed
McKenna (1991 to 1995) and Geoff Ryan (1995 to 1999). The work done by these two
individuals under the direction of the Uqqurmiut Inuit Artists Association has
given the Uqqurmiut Centre a sound foundation for future growth. Over the past
two years, Peter Wilson has built upon this foundation by continuing to work to
raise the profile of the Pangnirtung Print Shop and the Pangnirtung Tapestry
Studio, while working to expand southern marketing channels for the wide range
of fine arts and crafts that originate in Pangnirtung. Peter has also overseen
many building and equipment upgrades during the past two years, including
bringing in a new lithography press on last November's sealift, along with
thirteen sets of metal map drawers to re-house the Uqqurmiut Centre's extensive
collection of original drawings.
While Peter Wilson is
proud of his accomplishments so far at the Uqqurmiut Centre in Pangnirtung, his
greatest sense of pride comes from his two children, Isobel and Orion, who live
in Wolfville, Nova Scotia with their mother, master printmaker
Judith Leidl.
